Barbara Gothard

Biography:

Barbara Gothard is a Palm Springs, California-based artist whose approach to her artworks, and life, is evolution. Her complex paintings investigate contradictions, organic juxtaposed with abstract visual concepts.  The contrasts  reflect the cross-disciplinary linkages emanating from her global business and educational experiences.  Themes include dream-like metaphors of hurdles, which convey the painting’s “story” of introspection, reflection and hope, by the viewer and the artist, a “fighting optimist”.

Gothard’s paintings quietly provoke a cerebral reaction to contradictions that encourage challenging reality.  Her paintings are described as “sophisticated and approachable”, with echoes of surrealism, embodying simplicity and deception, at the same time.  Impeccably executed, knowledge of her artistry is evident in her use of color, draftsmanship, and execution.  Strength to overcome and hope are recurring themes.  Recently returning to printmaking the mono print process has added another dimension to Gothard’s paintings especially as she continues to develop the balance of harder edged shapes with the organic, setting up other kinds of spatial relationships.

Having weathered her own dramatic personal changes as an indirect catalyst to significant professional changes, she understands the delicate relationship between desire and results.  From Illinois roots to global business and residencies, she is compelled to translate these obstacles-as-opportunities into unfolding mysteries.  Evolving from one transition to another on her non-linear career path, Gothard grew up in a landlocked town in Illinois, always dreaming of traveling.  She has traveled the world through and understands the impact of our decisions – intended or unintended, and evolved to each and every challenge presented before turning them into unprecedented opportunities.  Her risks, although, not always calculated, have become an integral part of this evolution.

Gothard’s interest in art was identified early resulting in Saturday art classes, continuing with a focus on art during high school in Springfield, Illinois, Mount Mary College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and earning a Master’s degree from Long Island University, culminating with a Ph.D. from Michigan State University.  Gothard gained an appreciation for the importance of understanding the basics, developing increased sensitivity inherent in oil and watercolors.   Her path has zigzagged from artist, art teacher to principal while raising a family and finishing a Ph.D. to leaving education and changing family status; to joining the corporate sector for a multi-national fast food company then joining the entrepreneurial ranks as founder of a public affairs consulting firm; a return to the corporate sector for a leading multi-national chemical company, but this time in South Africa at a time of tremendous national change, which lead to another transition of “giving back” in the form of managing an iconic non-profit organization.

Gothard’s paintings are exhibited in group and solo exhibitions, including those at 2016 Palm Springs Art Museum Artists Council Juried Exhibition; 2016 Group Show,  Galerie Metanoia, Paris, France;  2016 Palm Springs Fine Arts Fair; A Single Grain of Rice,; Joshua Tree Art Gallery, Joshua Tree, CA; 2015 Group of 7: International Women Artists at Jorge Mendez Gallery; Palm Springs, CA; “Most Inventive” Best of Show Award, INVENTION, REINVENTION Juried Exhibit at Copper Mountain College, Joshua Tree, CA; 2015 Palm Springs Fine Art Fair; The Saguaro Hotel Exhibit, Palm Springs, CA; Art Slant Juried 2013 Showcase Winner, New York; City of Palm Springs Pedaling Juried Exhibit; Linus Gallery Juried “Dream State” Exhibition, Long Beach and Pasadena, CA; Palm Springs Art Museum Artists Council Juried Exhibit; Joshua Tree Art Gallery Invitationals (JTAG), Joshua Tree, CA; City of Palm Springs 75th Anniversary Juried Exhibit; In Memorial, 10th Street Gallery, San Diego, CA; Easel Show, Alexander Salazar Fine Arts, San Diego, CA; Twenty-Six, 10th Avenue Arts Centre, San Diego, CA.  Paintings are in private and institutional collections in: United Kingdom, France, South Africa and the United States(New York; Washington, D.C.; Pennsylvania; Connecticut; Michigan; Illinois; Texas; New Mexico; Arizona; and California).
