RENGE SERIES_ Barbara Gothard

Renge Series: Causes, good or bad, always have an effect - positive or negative. Continuing my exploration of contradictions - a wild flower found on a morning mountain hike, blowing in the wind and a signature rose - my Renge Series is influenced by Buddhist traditions of T’ien-t’ai in China and Nichiren Daishonin in Japan (1222-1282). The Renge Series visually explores the simultaneity of cause and effect symbolized by flowers that seed and blossom in muddy water - at the same time.

From modest Illinois roots my  creative potential has always aligned with Surrealism and curiosity about the unconscious mind, its contradictions of the interplay of reality, dreamlike qualities, and kaleidoscopic colors of life's conflicts. Viewers are challenged to consider what cause and effect mean to them as they consider the reality they see, or think they see, as reflection and hope.

My digital paintings created on my iPad combine images I encounter daily in my ever-changing California desert environment, it’s soft, malleable, and metamorphic, surrounded by majestic mountains, and awash in brilliant colors.   My artwork continuum evolves from traditional Art education and my historical influencers: Bosch, O’Keefe, and Magritte.
